Modern twist on Local History Awards

The Local History Centre is hoping to capture images and stories of Vincent, past and present, in this year’s Local History Awards.

To highlight the modern twist in the awards, the event poster features a more contemporary image of two punks taken in Leederville in 1982.

Georgia Kennedy’s photo of her housemates Dean Lucas and Ivan Nemorin was one of last year’s finalists in the photographic section of the awards. The photo was taken by 17 year old Georgia when Dean was 16 and Ivan 18, the setting was the outside toilet in their share house, where the Luna Outdoor Cinema is now located.

“I took a lot of photos of the punk scene around that time, I was managing a photoshop on Oxford Street which allowed me the freedom to take photos. Film was expensive back then for people our age,” said Georgia.

The Local History Centre wants to expand their collection to include more modern works.

“Entries to our Local History Awards, images and written works, help to build the City’s rich and diverse Local History Collection,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“For the first time, we are encouraging contemporary (post-2000) photographs of Vincent alongside the historic entries we usually receive. This encourages people to rethink what they would normally consider to be history and we’d love to see entries from our more recent past.”

“This year we have also added new youth awards in both the written and photographic categories to encourage young people to take part in building the history of our neighbourhoods,” she said.

The Local History Awards have one written category this year. This can include memoirs, essays, historical narratives (based on research) or original research of any kind. The Photographic Awards, sponsored by Claude Iaconi of Abel Property Group, are split into categories for pre-2000 images and post-2000 images.

Entries to the City of Vincent Local History Awards can be made online at the library website or by sending in a hard copy along with a completed entry form before 5pm Friday 30 August 2019.

Judging is undertaken by an independent judging panel and an awards ceremony will be held in October 2019.
