Vincent's unique history honoured at the 2023 Local History Awards

Never-before-seen photos and stories have been recognised at the City of Vincent's Local History Awards 2023.

The winners were announced at an event at Vincent’s Library and Local History Centre on 18 November.

Deputy Mayor Alex Castle was the MC while Plunkett Homes Senior Design Team Leader Adam Kelly handed out the prizes.

About 60 attendees celebrated the winning entries and enjoyed morning tea.

In the Life in Vincent category, first prize was awarded to local WAFL blogger Rick Vredenbregt’s story called The Fred Book Grandstand – Contrasting Events of Celebration and Tragedy.

The story is about significant Perth personality Fred Brook and the building of the Perth Oval grandstand (now HBF Park).

Another Perth Oval story took out the first prize in the History of Place category.

Dr Peter Gall’s Perth Oval Sunday 1 April 1928 entry talks about Wing Commander Bert Hinkler’s landing and the introduction of new technology, aviation.

A 1922 photo of the former Norwood Hotel, 282 Lord Street won the historic images category.

Local photographer Josh Wells’ snap of Danny Lenzarini making fresh pasta at Golden Ravioli, 265 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth in 2021 won the contemporary award.

The People’s Choice award, which was selected by City of Vincent staff, went to Peter Kalaf of the Castellorizian (Cazzie) Association of Western Australia for a photo from the opening of Cazzie House, 160 Anzac Road, Mt Hawthorn on 10 December 1981.

All entries, including 100 photos and 18 written pieces, are now on display in the library foyer and the Local History Centre.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners for their outstanding entries,” said Mayor Alison Xamon.

“We received intriguing photos and meaningful stories featuring sporting clubs, hotels, war veterans, schools and artists.

“I encourage our community to visit the Local History Centre and check out this year’s award entries which will now form part of the centre's diverse collection.”

The Awards are sponsored by Claude Iaconi from Edison Residential, Leederville Cameras and Plunkett Homes.

  • First prize: Perth Oval, Sunday 1 April 1928
  • Second prize: The Mt Lawley Subway - enabling people to move safely and efficiently between the suburbs
  • Third prize: Effervescence - Cool Drink Factory to a Space for Emerging Artists
  • Special mention: A Memoir of the North Perth Church of Christ by Edna Maud Stewart (1905-1985) edited by Bronwyn Julie Patterson (niece of Edna Stewart)
