Music in Vincent

Support for spaces where performers and audiences can experience original live music is vital to fostering creativity in our suburbs and for connecting people in an increasingly digital world. The Music in Vincent project began in 2019 with the aim to record and showcase the stories of key people associated with live music venues in the City of Vincent.

Thirteen interviews were conducted in 2019 with musicians, venue owners, program directors and bookers connected with five iconic live music venues in the Vincent area, past and present.

The interviews were conducted by Dr Adam Trainer and filmed and edited by Chris Murray. The project was a collaboration between the Local History Centre and the State Library of Western Australia.

The following five YouTube clips were created from interview footage filmed at each venue. Full transcripts and audio files are available via the City of Vincent library catalogue and State Library of Western Australia online catalogue.

The North Perth Ethnic Music Centre

Located in the North Perth Town Hall’s Lesser Hall, the North Perth Ethnic Music Centre was set up by musician Linsey Pollock in 1982. His vision was for a community arts organisation that celebrated the diverse cultural roots of the many communities in Perth’s inner city suburbs. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the North Perth Ethnic Music Centre offered music, educational programs and performance events, including the signature Friday night Café Folklorico, until relocating to Fremantle in 1996 where it became known as Kulcha. Music in Vincent presents three long-form interviews with centre coordinator Francis Fong, musician Mark Cain and administrator Marion Granich.

The Rosemount Hotel

The heart of North Perth since 1902, the Rosemount Hotel – or the ‘Rosie’ as it is affectionately known to locals, has been a champion of live music in Vincent, offering a range of styles and sounds since the 1980s. Community is integral to the venue’s ethos, with local music events a core part of the Rosemount’s live music programming.
