How to communicate with your loved ones safely online

Using Social Media Apps: Facebook, Skype, and Instant Messaging

The aim of this one-off, interactive workshop for people 50+ is to teach participants the skills to stay safe while they are connecting with their loved ones over social media. The workshop is focused on reconnecting or strengthening connections with family and friends who might live overseas or interstate.

Cybersecurity can be a huge issue, with new spam techniques and viruses resurfacing every day. This workshop will highlight and provide practical strategies for recognising potentially dangerous activities, how to deal with spams, fake news, and what to do to avoid identity theft. The workshop topics are easy to understand and relevant to the participants' needs. It also focuses on real human connection while staying safe in the online environment.

Topics of the workshop:

  • How to create a social media account
  • Basic Privacy settings and tools
  • How to set your language preference
  • Instructions on how to block and ban unwanted contact
  • Password security tips
  • Where to go if you need to report cyberbulling or illegal activity

Language support is available; please state your preferred language when you register.

Requirements: Current email address and password. This is required for the interactive component of the Workshop. Trainers will not have time to assist participants to create an email account or recover forgotten passwords (e.g., Gmail/Yahoo).

To RSVP or ask any questions, please contact Henrietta on 9275 4411 or e-mail h.biczi@umbrellacommunitycare.com.au or get a ticket online via Eventbrite.
