Under A Venice Moon with Margaret Cameron

Past Event

Join local Perth author to discuss her newest novel Under a Venice Moon, a captivating story of the lesser-known history of Venice, Italy.

About the Author

Margaret grew up in outer suburban Perth in the 1950s and 1960s. She still remembers sitting on the dry grass outside her primary school to wave as the newly-crowned Queen Elizabeth II drove past in her motorcade. It's a far cry from the setting for her memoir Under A Venice Moon, published by Hachette Australia.

Margaret's love of Venice takes her to the watery city for two months each year, where she explores beyond Venezia turistico. She visits the garden where Ernest Hemingway sat to write, and the seventeenth-century brothel and restaurant where the original price list for services still hangs on the wall. As she says, 'It's what to do after the gondola ride.'

A Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Australia fostered her interest in historical research and she plans another book, also set in Venice, describing the life of Marina Morosini, a cloistered nun and the lover of Giacomo Casanova.

Margaret has written short stories and numerous articles for magazines. Under A Venice Moon was featured in The Australian Woman's Weekly (April 2022) and in The Post newspapers (4th May, 2022). It is her first book.

Under a Venice Moon

A Venetian holiday ignites Margaret's interest in the private city behind the tourist facade and the obscure tales from its history. Tantalised by stories of this lesser-know Venice, she returns for a one-month stay, determined to uncover the Venice of the Venetians.

Stepping out from her comfort zone, Margaret finds friendships along with adventure, and she makes a significant discover: life can you lead you along rewarding paths if you let it. As each day passes, her time in Venice becomes more than just an interlude; soon the floating city feels like home. Could she leave her satisfying life in Perth and start anew in Venice? The question becomes urgent when romance waits where she least expected to find it. A holiday romance, no more than that? Or the door opening to a new life?

Margaret assesses her life's pathway, acknowledging the strength of culture and the bonds of home; the safety of the known balanced against the charm of the new. And she discovers that sometimes the greatest adventure of all is being open to chance, accepting outcomes and finding contentment with life as it is...

"Margaret Cameron moves effortlessly between the personal and the big picture issues of politics, history, society and change, writing with an easy anecdotal style, an attractive sense of humour and a sharp eye."
